Care Communication

I would say my topic falls under the care communication category. Care communication deals with risk managers educating the audience about the risk so that they have the information needed to make a decision (Lundgren & McMakin 7). This category fits the approach I am trying to communicate to my audience about rape, so that they have the needed information and can make a decision on how they would deal with the problem.

Hi Desiree, I just wanted to add some input on the type of risk communication that the risk of rape might entail. Although I fully agree that communicating about rape falls under the care category, I think you could also consider it falling under the category labeled consensus communication. The distinction is made based on your purpose (and somewhat on your audience). If your primary objective in communicating the risk of rape is simply to increase awareness, you were right on target in classifying this as care communication. But it's also possible that your main goal is solution-oriented (you want to improve community programs that help reduce rape instances, for example) and requires your audience to collaborate and reach an agreement--well, that's consensus communication. I assume your risk communication project for class is more geared toward educating, which, as you noted, will clearly be classified as care communication. But I just wanted to point out that communicating the risks of rape could also take the form of consensus communication; and that the type of communication is dependent on your purpose (simply educating your audience vs. encouraging your audience to work towards a solution) as much as your topic (in your case, rape).
